Malmesbury is the main town in the region known as the Swartland. The area was first known as “Het Zwartland” (Black Land) because of the indigenous plant, the “Renosterbos” which turns black in the warm, dry summers.

The area has a Mediterranean climate favouring the production of grapes, wheat, olives, canola and fruit and many industries in the town are based on these products. Close by residential areas around Malmesbury include Chatsworth, Ilingelethu, Kalbaskraal, Abbotsdale and Riverlands.
