The Texas Company of South Africa was founded in 1911, and operated under this name until it became part of the Caltex group of companies in 1936.

Early imports of paraffin would take between 3 to 4 months from the time of the order to delivery in Cape Town, arriving in packs of two 5-gallon tins packed in strong wooden boxes.

Petrol was first sold from handcarts in tins, and later in steel drums, with hand pumps used to fill motor vehicles tanks. Caltex Oil South Africa has been recognized for the introduction of many “firsts”, the most notable of which was the establishment of the first filling station in Sea Point, Cape Town.

The company in Africa has built a legacy of innovation, success and commitment – all based on partnership, which continues to the present. We are intent on building a company in Africa for the long-term, which is a growth company, and in doing so we need the most talented people. It is a clear strategic decision to build the business on African talent.

We believe that this empowerment initiative will motivate and enthuse our employees and at the same time reinforce our vision to be the global energy company most admired for its people, partnerships and performance.
